The Exmoor Red Stag - Hunted!

The Red Stag of Somerset is the famous emblem of Exmoor. Anywhere you visit across Exmoor you will see the iconic silhouette of the glorious crowned head, the majestic Red Stag.

Why then is this noble and magnificent animal still hunted by seemingly savage people across the hills several times a week?

There are three packs of 'Stag Hounds' still operating across Somerset, the Quaontock Stag Hounds, The Tiverton Stag Hounds and last but most certainly not the least, Devon and Somerset Stag Hounds.

Whilst some hunts still venture out with a pack of hounds and claim to be 'trail hunting', the Devon and Somerset Stag Hounds hunt three times a week using just two hounds. Often the have three 'couples' used in relay, or switching and replacing one couple for another if they fail to pick up on a Stag.

All the hunts have members carrying guns.

The DSSH hunt under one of the 'exemptions' within the Hunting Act 2004, this is the exemption that allows hunting for 'research and observation'.
